Hello, new member here.
I thought i would share my project with you all(ask you lots of questions). This is my late fathers old dirt bike. A 1969 sachs 125 enduro. The story goes that he picked it up at the factory in Europe, toured all over Europe and then shipped it back to home. Once home he pulled out origenal motor and swaped in an early dt1 250. He road it this way for several years until kids came along. My older brother was clibing on it one day and knocked it over, it landed with the shifter through the side cover and was parked for years. When i was 11 to 12 i got into riding and my dad fixed his bike and rode it a few more years. It has sat for about 25 years.

Should be able to get five by doing the same thing again and again.
Great bike, great story. Great reason to restore it and pass it on to his grandchildren one day.

So after bringing it home from California I looked it over a bit and found the piston and clutch were stuck. I put it in gear and rocked it back and forth a bit and they freed up. So i put some pre mix in and gave it several kicks.
Nothing
Pulled the plug and checked spark, yep nice and fat.
Pulled the carb. It didnt look that bad really. Cleaned it up and reinstalled. Gave it a couple kicks and it fired right up!!! Woohooo!!!
It smoked like no other. Black oil ran out from the front of the engine at the exhaust pipe and out the tail pipe. After a few minutes it cleaned up but still some drips from the tail pipe.
I thought, "screw it, im riding it!" So i ripped it around the back yard for a bit. Then it petered out a died.
Cleaned the carb again and it fired right back up again. Ripped up the back yard some more... then it petered out and died again. Yep, carb again. Cleaned it and Ripped up the yard some more. Just couldnt keep from smiling ear to ear. What a great fun bike!!!

You have an interesting bike. It looks like the finishes under the grease and grime are in very good condition considering the age and length of storage. The engine swap (update doesn't seem the appropriate term) looks to be a thoughtout method and nicely executed. It is rare to see a right side shift on a DT in the states.

Yeah, the right side shift is hard to get used to. My dad learned to ride on an old triumph of some sort that was right side shift and so he set this bike up that way. You should have heard him complain every time he was on a left side shift bike. After riding the sachsaha around the back yard i see what the issue was. My instincts are all wrong. I have to think each time i want to use my feet and that takes too long. I think i will be switching it over.
