I recently put a new float needle and seat in and made sure the float is at the correct height. I also turn off the petcock every time I stop.

However if it is flooded for some reason, just hold the throttle wide open and keep kicking it? With the choke off?

I'm going to the DMV tomorrow, hopefully to finally close this out and get my title, I'll stop on the way home and get a couple of new spark plugs.

Leave petcock off and hold throttle wide open, and yes choke off.  Might need to dry plug off a few times.

Best to get friend to help push or tow start.  Or be careful with kicker...  not the strongest on the CT if someone starts to get aggressive.

Keep throttle held open when it fires until it starts to clear out and rev clean.  then you can back off, open petcock, and ride away.

Plug will not be wet if not flooded...  engines run on air/fuel vapor, not wet fuel.

Could have had plug go bad and flooded trying to start it.

Disclaimer, everyone here is smarter than me, BUT I have about 10 Yamahas and if it was me I would check the timing one more time to make absolutely sure that it is spot on (easy to do).  Then I would drain the gas, clean the tank and petcock one more time, you will probably see some specks of stuff that you are surprised are there.  Put a new inline filter in it.  Take off the carb clean the pilot (look through it and since I keep a supply I would put a new one in if possible) and I have never, repeat never had one with spark not start.  I recently did this with an Elsinore for a friend that he bought for $500 that had not run in 20 years, it ran and he immediately sold it for $1,500.  Again, this is work that takes patience and can be frustrating, I have cleaned a carb five times (See Makotosun's comment, clean your carb and then clean it again) but it will eventually run.  As Mark said, it could be flooded AND I have had one that would not start when hot due to a bad clutch side seal sucking in trans oil, but that is in my opinion and experience after I got it started the first time.

Follow MarkT.s advice to a T on a flooded bike.  I am always amazed at my friends who do what I tell them (Mark's exact procedure) and their bike starts.  This is a trick I learned too late in life from Dave Meis.

I appreciate all the advice, also have been looking at some YouTube videos. Getting late here, so I'll try it again tomorrow. I had tried kicking it with the throttle wide open and choke off, but I did not turn off the petcock. I'll try that tomorrow morning.

I'm pretty sure it is flooded, I do occasionally end up kicking it with the choke on, and I forget to turn on the key :0)

Now that everyone has confirmed that the best way to solve it is keep WOT, petcock off, and kick it or get someone to help me push it, I've learned something. Also maybe be more careful not to flood it again...

Not sure why so many people clean their carb 20 times. Just do it once & do it right. Jets out, that's all removable jets & emulsion tube [needle jet] then prod & poke & eyeball them. So long as you've prodded then to the full size of the jet it should be sweet. Mind you my rides are so far between that my carb likely needs cleaning of that damn terrible fuel varnish we're stuck with down here every time i ride. Always intend to run it dry or flush something through like Av Gas but never happens.

RT325 I normally agree. In fact that's why in the first post I wrote "If it ain't broke don't fix it". I just ran across this little ultrasonic cleaner at a thrift shop, so picked it up. Even though I didn't need to clean the carburetor again, I thought I'd give it a try. I think what happened was I upset the balance by cleaning it a little bit better than it was. Oh well, live and learn. I'll try to get it started a little later today and then do some adjusting.

RT325 that's why I start with my disclaimer that I am not as smart as others here.  My problem has always been trying to find the quick and easy way out.  Starting at the top of the fuel system (tank) and working my way down is the do it once and do it right method, but I was always in a hurry (had something to do with working and commuting 60 to 70 hours a week in Los Angeles).  I alway was hoping I would get that last speck of trash out of my fuel system by cleaning the jets one more time and it never seemed to work thus I ended up taking the carb apart three or more times before I cleaned the entire fuel system and ended the problem.  Now that I am retired I am more meticulous because I have the time to be meticulous.

Got it fired up! First I removed both spark plugs and dried them, then with the plugs out kicked the bike about 10 times with a throttle wide open and gas turned off. I could see gas vapor inside the spark plug holes, so I just let it rest for about 20 minutes to air out. Put the plugs back in and kicked it about seven times with the throttle wide open, choke and gas off, and it tried to fire once. Took the spark plug I was using out, dried it off, and left the spark plug hole open for about 15 minutes. Then plug back in, kicked it about 10 times WOT and it started trying to run. About 10 kicks later it came life so I let it idle for a while.

I'm going to be far more careful about making sure the petcock is off, and sometimes I was also turning the choke on if I knew I wasn't going to be riding for the rest of the day. I did that so I won't forget to turn it on the next morning. I'm thinking it's possible that would allow gas to migrate from the plunger area into the crankcase?

Both spark plugs are working great, even the 50-year-old one. That ultrasonic cleaner really did a good job on them. I used it with hot tap water, some of that biodegradable detergent degreaser I posted in the other thread, and some vinegar. Took a good 30-45 minutes of cleaning, but they look brand new.

I also put a spark plug socket and ratchet handle wrapped in a rag in my tail bag. I don't have any tools on the bike currently, and at least if I have those I have a chance to get it started again, if it floods when I'm out riding :0)

Sorry people, didn't mean to touch a nerve. Was just saying. I've never used an ultrasonic cleaner but maybe i should invest in one. One of my kids works in a workshop/shop that deals mostly in honda quads & said they use one at work & swears by it. Cheers.
