Nope, you did not touch a nerve.  I am a shadetree mechanic at best.  On my 71 RT1 I thought I had the gas tank and petcock clean and I thought the carb was VERY clean and every time I would try to start it, no go.  I would take the carb apart and sure enough the pilot would be blocked again.  I finally found the time to do it right and sure enough there was fine sanding grit still in my newly painted gas tank.  I managed to chip my tank cleaning it.  When I finally did everything one more time it ran (and still runs) perfectly. I learned my lesson, but work definitely got in the way of my hobbies!

I do have a Harbor Freight (chinese tool store here in the U.S.), that I use on my carbs.  For the most part I clean them right the first time now and don't have the problems I once had of getting in a hurry and having it take longer than if I did it right the first time!

Again, no harm done.

I had an unusual one once where there was like a clear coating on the black floats & came off --or arrived from elseware--then settled under the main jet on whatever bike it was & on an open throttle it sucked against the main jet. Might've been when playing with methanol in the "70's & strange things happened back then lol.

I've always started the Yamaha (when cold) with two kicks with the start lever down, then sit for a short while idling with the lever down to warm it up a bit. It never seems to start on the first kick, always the second one.

I found out today it works perfectly (cold) if I give it one kick with the start lever down, then pull it up and it starts on the second kick. Once it's warm it always starts with one kick. This way I'm not dumping extra fuel into it.
