I have been clueless too long about telling speedo and tach inner cables from one another.  Also clueless about which end goes where.

first pic is speedo end of what I think is speedo inner oriented the way I think it should go.

second pic is the tach engine drive end with inner I think is tach inner, oriented the way I think it should go.

I am fairly certain this is wrong.

any help massively appreciated

thanks

The "disc" on the cable in my experience has always been at the bottom of the cable.  I have greased many a Speedo cable in my time and this has always entailed removing the bottom connection, pulling out the inner cable, greasing it with molyslip and guiding it back up the outer cable again.

Reason why this is so is because you do not grease the upper 100mm of cable to prevent grease migrating into the instrument heads.  If the disc was at the top, you would have to pull the cable from the top and on greasing, effectively be greasing the cable right to the top as excess inner cable grease wipes off into the top of the outer cable.
