Oil for foam filter? was created by Tom P

I just received a Uni NU1409-St foam air filter, and it mentions that you MUST use oil. I know that they make specific oils for these, but I remember back in the day I used to just use motor oil. Any suggestions of what I could use in lieu of purchasing a specific air cleaner oil? I've seen mentions of bar chain oil, I also have a spray bottle of mineral oil, like used for a chopping block. I'm only riding on the road right now, so I'm not in dusty environments. Any responses would be appreciated. Also, would it hurt to just run this dry, if I'm just riding on the road?

By the way, this filter has a collar that is a bit larger than the carburetor on my CT-1, but with the hose clamp snugged down, it works just fine

I'd squeeze a very small amount of light oil though it just make it damp but not enough to collect at the bottom overnight & drip off. Not even sure I have a reason for that but don't like to see them totally dry. Just me. In fact I might get one of those myself for my 175.

Any oil is better than nothing.  A little two stroke oil works.  In fact, old trick used at races was wash foam filter in premixed fuel..  when gas evaporates there was enough oil in the filter to catch the dirt.

That's a great idea MarkT. In fact from what I understand the filter oil you buy is basically just a sticky oil with dye that has a thinner in it, so that it fully saturates the foam cells, then evaporates leaving the sticky oil.

I'm not sure about "great idea"...  but we did it.  We were mixing 20:1 ratios with old fashioned oils back then that were more like motor oil...  or it was motor oil.

My MG1-T lived on 30 weight Chevron Delo 400 premix because that's what my Dad had in the garage.

Well I decided to soak it in two-stroke oil. Just massaged it in really well, then squeezed out quite a bit, and left it outside for about 4 hours. Doesn't drip, I think it'll be fine

I’ve been using 2-stroke oil forever. I simply dump about a shot glass of oil in a plastic bag and work it around in the empty bag. Then I put the foam filter in the oily bag and wring it around and work it with my hands. It makes it easy to get a uniform amount of oil on the filter and your hands stay clean!

Took the bike for a ride around town, and this Uni filter actually does make it a little bit quieter, compared to that cheap metal mesh pod filter I was using. Seems like I'm not getting as much metallic noise up front as I was before. Revs out great, just like before.
