Correct Gearbox Oil for DT3 was created by steam_biker

I've been using 10w 40 oil in my DT3 gearbox, I have read that light gear oil is better. What do other people think?

Going by memory YAMABOBINTX used Castrol 10 - 40.
I like the synthetic blend sold at Cycle Gear.
i doubt you need to go lighter.

Whatever oil you choose, make sure it is rated for wet clutches.  Most modern automotive oils have "energy conserving" slippery additives that can sometimes make clutch slip.  Some of the Shell Rotella oils have the proper JASO M ratings...  as do many motorcycle-specific oils.

Then there are the "boutique" oils...  I personally run Torco MTF-L as I scored a couple of cases cheap on ebay from a shop that closed down.  It's a lightweight oil...  gear oils have EP (extreme pressure) additives that do protect gears better.  Especially good for straight cut motorcycle gears.  Maxima makes a good line of motorcycle gear oils as I'm sure do others...

When I was racing, there was visibly less "metalflake" in the oil when draining when I used motorcycle gear oil.  Maxima also did a study with their Supercross bikes and found measurably less wear in trans...  (worst gear wear was found in bikes running ATF in trans)

That said, unless you ride a whole bunch or have modified for a lot more HP or something, you're not likely to see any real advantage.  Just change the oil often as recommended in manual...  every 2,000 miles I think it is?
