Top end or not was created by adguy2112

Finally figured out how to create a you tube video. Curious what the consensus is on the way this CT sounds and if it indicates if a top end will suffice. Any advice would be appreciated, I just got it running and it idles snd accelerates perfectly. Just a bit of a rattle that I don’t like.

Sounds like typical top end rattle to me, the 175's in particular are prone to it. Mine was doing it fairly soon after a new top end, but you'rs sounds worse as it doesn't go away when you rev past idle, so I'd say a new top end would be good preventative maintenance.

Assuming you filmed with a phone they tend to amplify the rattle. Pretty standard 175cc rattle in the video below, but filmed with a dedicated microphone so not as pronounced as a phone mic tends to make it.

sounds like top end.
heres what my 360 sounded like when it had a loose piston.

When the engine is decelerating and between shifts is when you could really hear it.
If its rattling loud even at idle its a sign it should be checked out, see what size feeler gauge you can fit in the bore with the piston

Thanks to all of you for the reply and advice (and the videos). I've owned many Yamaha enduros and currently have three CTs (1, 2 & 3), a DT1, an LT2 and a DT250A. Interestingly I've never done a top end and have had the rattle at some degree or another on many of them. This one seemed to be more pronounced than the others and worried me a bit especially because the bike was pretty roached when I got it. Given this will be my first top end hopefully a mix of the manuals on the site and some forum questions will get me on the right path. I gather a Wiseco piston kit is the safest choice once I determine what the clearances are. Seems the kits don't come with the wrist pin bearing which I'm guessing I should swap out while I'm in there. Then will need to locate someone nearby to machine the jug (norcal). Everyone here who talks about doing a top end seems to be pretty relaxed about it as though it's a basic fix. Looking forward to knocking one out so it's not an unknown any longer.

It's shockingly simple, especially compared to a four stroke. Any machine shop should be able to do it, be sure chat them up and make sure they know to chamfer the ports.

Personally I lean away from the Wiseco because if it's an old one from ebay the clearance specs may be different from a newer one.

I'd say the safest choice is an oem piston and rings, and yes may as well do the wrist pin bearing and new cir-clips too.

Is member Enduronut is doing them still or not? I mailed mine off to him and purchased the parts through him as well just to make sure all my ducks were in a row via his extensive experience.
