I have been at war with my DT1-B 250. I am struggling to get it to run properly. I have discovered that my coil is no good and I need a replacement. I have been searching for a NOS replacement but can't seem to find one. I am wondering if anyone out there knows of a good aftermarket alternative?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Have you checked with DEET for a coil?  He might have one.

I don't know Deet. I am still somewhat new to this forum. I have looked on eBay for NOS. I have seen lots of lots of "fits your vehicle" aftermarket stuff on Amazon and the like. I figured I would see if anyone here has had success with something other than an OEM coil.
Thanks. Pmb

Before you spend money & possibly don't end up with a cure--Love these type of problems to get my--or our--teeth into. So can we help please. Heaps of single wire magneto type of coils on the internet.

Not sure why they say 6 or 12 volt but its a single wire AC 'not dc' ignition coil & should do the trick. But--back to what's going on with the bike please?.

What makes you think it is bad?

Well first I want to say that I dug a little deeper into this website. I should have looked through the other sections in an effort to read what has already been asked and discussed in the forum before I made my post. I read, in a different thread, a reply from MARKT where he mentioned that Deet was able to cut the coil open and solder a new spark plug wire onto the coil.

I just got through cutting my original coil open just enough to get the old wire out and expose the contact. I am going to try the repair method first and solder a new length of wire on and see what happens.

I appreciate the the link to the aftermarket coil. I will check it out...

As far as the running issues with my bike goes...  that's a long tale of chasing my tail through a variety of problems that all manifested in a bike that would not rev cleanly. Had no power. Always felt like it had a fouled plug. Backfired and would seem to run fine until I would try and ride it.

I have a sudco carb on it. That was supposed to fix everything. Nope!  I then replaced the crank seal behind the mag and that helped a bunch. The old seal was hard and non compliant.

At this point I am hopeful that I am able to get it tuned up with carb adjustments.

I determined that I had a compromised wire on my coil and I want to eliminate it as another variable to my puzzle.

Thanks for for your reply.

Hi DEET!

I just saw your question about what made me think my coil was bad.

answer:  the spark plug cap was not original and there was a different one that was poorly spliced on. I attempted to solder on a new piece of wire. I also bought a new 5k ohm NGK ceramic cap.

At first it seemed like it was good but then I noticed the bike missing/hesitating. I checked to see if the new cap was secured properly and when I tried to check that it was screwed on tight, the spliced section of wire pulled off leaving only a single strand of wire still connected to my solder joint. So I would call that a fail. I ended up making the wire a bit too short and when I tried to plug onto the side plug on my head I believe I stressed the cable right where the solder joint was and snapped all but one of the strands.

I now have the original coil cut open just around where the cable enters and is pushed onto a spike at the back end. I just need to find some cooper core wire and I think I can get the original coil back in operation.

Any my advice is always welcome.

Thanks to all of you guys!!!
