Cleaning my exhaust pipe. was created by pmb

Hello. In a different post about my carburetor, the discussion turned to my exhaust pipe. I thought I should start a new post.
I started by removing the silencer/spark arrestor out of the end of the pipe and then tapping it with a dead blow hammer to see if I could knock anything loose. I did free up some junk and got it out. I then poured a bunch of gas in and let it soak for about an hour while periodically shaking it around. I then rinsed it out with water multiple times to prevent blowing myself up.

This is where I expose my lack of experience with this old 2 stroke stuff. When I rinsed it out with water, I shoved a hose down the neck and most of the water came back out of the neck. When I shove the hose into the end of the pipe most of the water comes back out of the end.

Then I blew it out with an air compressor. Again most of the air comes back out of the same side I blow into. I have no idea what the pipe looks like on the inside. I have searched for a diagram or a cut away photo of the inside but haven't been able to find one.

Is is this a normal situation. I know the pipe is supposed to create some back pressure but I had no idea how restrictive it seems to be.

Thanks.

Not knowing what bike you have, this photo was posted a while back by one of our members and it shows the inner baffles and spark arrestors inside the stinger portion of the exhaust on the bigger bore bikes. I would think all pipe styles have similar innards.

Good photo. I can't believe I forgot to mention what bike I have.
It is a 69 Yamaha DT1B 250 with the original pipe.
Thanks.

any further updates on the pipe clean? I too considering this task on my TY175. I think I will use a fire pit fire to cook the crud out. Others use lye or crystal drain cleaner.
