Great work on the wheels,I like the stuft tires on the scrambler look myself but not the tread pattern.I would go with something a bit less knobby to keep away the temptation to take it to the track. :haha

I am going to have to break down and learn how to build wheels. It is really amazing how much nicer those look when really done and detailed out. You guys are setting the bar on this stuff entirely too high! :OnFire

She is Italian, .and she put up with my moped nonsense until I could afford a real Yamaha, 1970's French "variated" mopeds are, well, cataclysmic mechanical nightmares at best, a topic of conversation another time.....

Can't wait to see pictures of Dave's new wheels on his bike !

Here's a bit more detail of an Ascot's motor......

one thing I have noticed is that these motors are heavy and wide.

A complete stock YDS2 motor with the iron barrels requires 2 people to lift ...gotta weigh close to 100 pounds

Using the correct Ascot aluminum jugs and heads along with removing the generator and installing the mag will shave atleast 20 lbs
off my Ascot's motor.

I think twins in general are obviously heavy due to having two cylinders crank and carbs.

I am still in the process of installing new seals etc......in my motor

The kickstarter lever reminds me of a CT1...only it's on left side.

I started "mocking up" some pipes based on the Ascot hop-up article from back in the day to get some basic dimensions

I will probably try and make them very close to original down pipes....
so they will hopefully look visually similar to the original Ascot's?

It's way too soon to even think about actually making any pipes yet as will need to have a rolling chassis and engine in place.

Just kinda visualizing what I will need to craft a set of these pipes?
Hopefully I can massage and shape the cones to look similar to the pressed
OEM pipes?

The final step will be to get them chromed

Building these pipes is more about aesthetics than performance on this restoration.

My goal is to make the bike look as original as I reasonably can?

Hi Dave:

I am sure you already have a copy of it, but we have a PDF of the Yamaha Racing Tips in our download section:

yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/other-manua...-factory-racing-tips

It does not cover your bike specifically, but has a lot of good technical information regarding both the desert and street racers of the day. I think it is slightly after coverage of your bike, but there may be some information that may be of use in your project?

Mako thanks.....yes I do have an original copy of that.

That book was released around 1972 or so.... almost a decade after the Ascot !

Yamaha put this guide out to help tuners tune the new "reed valve" based motors Yamaha introduced that same year.
Porting and pipe requirements changed with a reed valve and Yamaha engineers wanted to make sure their newly introduced technology continued to end up in winners circle !
Very smart idea when you think about it ?
Yamaha was a leader in two stroke technology....starting in the mid 50's in Japan and continues today !
