Changing the stearing bearing was created by Gerryz
Hello guys!
Has anybody changed the original ball stearing bearing to tapered rolling bearing?
I think this leaves a gap on the bottom of the under bracket. Should I leave the lower bearing shell from the ball bearings?
What do you think?
I have bought AllBalls no. 22-1008 which should fit.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with tapered bearings.
Those that have fitted them tended to use tapered for the bottom only, with standard for the top.

There are threads I've seen in past about this install. Try a search on "ball bearings". several will pop up.
I agree w/GR8Uncleal. I polished the races and simply put new ball bearings in. Felt like new!

I've had ball races regularly "pre-dented" from the factory caused i guess by some machine tightening them before crating up for freighting. Were very lumpy & select a possition to steer to which is no damn good.
With lumpy dented customers cup & cones i just used to spin them in the lathe with emery over the end of a shaped tool & force it in hard & they came up good every time.
Then new balls of course.
19x1/4 bottom & 22x3/16 top & steer of into the sunset in a straight line.
I saying that, ya can't beat taper rollers if you can find some to fit.
But my Mk8 Bultaco Pursang had ordinary everyday bearing like wheel bearings etc With a spacer like wheel bearings i think [must've had] & tighten up as tight as ya like & just roll perfect.
Now i've said that i can't find any pics to prove it & only come up with taper rollers so i don't know anymore & possibly wrong--again.
