Jetting a US 1981 DT175 was created by Perry01
Greetings,I brought home a recently restored 1981 DT175.
I purchased it at sea level and brought it to my home 5000 feet elevation. It’s running quite rich due to the change in elevation. The carb has 3J1 00 on it. It’s a newer "anti-tamper" restricted emissions carb with left side airbox.
Stock jetting is 150 main and 22.5 pilot. I ordered genuine mikuni 145 and 140 main jets and a 20 pilot jet. My question is, how do I lean out the midrange with a fixed jet needle? I know you can add washer shims to richen the mixture, but that’s not what I wanna do.
Any suggestions?

Bit out of my expertise as all carbs i'm used to are clip needle type.
Could try a new fully adjustable carb, Dare i say it Chinese!! to experiment. I have one on my older 175 & works great.
But i'm at sea level. Can you replace your fixed needle with an adjustable one.
If the pilot screw is in there but capped off can you get at it under the cap & back it out a bit to see if the overlap to helps midrange although that's getting a bit far away from pilot.
Also i always end up thinking exhaust--so does it rev out fully or sound strangled.
Choke not accidentaly left on. Air bleed to the emulsion tube/needle jet can get blocked with an air filter fallen to bits & the sponge pieces go straight in there.
Nothing restricting the air filter box inlet--rag under the seat etc. Ok i'm getting stupid i know.

The guy who restored the bike rebuilt the carb and it functions as it should. The pilot and main jets I ordered arrive on Monday. I will start with the pilot circuit and then change out the main jet and see how that works. I’d rather not swap out an OEM carb on this all original restored bike with a Chinese knock off carb.
Since there are only 90 miles on the rebuilt top end, I’m not revving it past 5000 RPM for now. I’m hoping to get some more miles on it before opening it up. That’s why I’d like to lean out the midrange throttle.
