The one at work I used was probably old when I started there in the "60's & had a steel filing wheel & ran true--I think.

Found it in the manual
Can't post picture

For the DT400B
Top Ring end gap, Free = approx 0.44 max (11.0mm)
Bottom ring end gap, Free = approx .20 max (5.0mm)

So this appears to say when rings are relaxed and not pressed into the cylinder for above spec
and I'm good and my new set of rings ordered that are also the exact same gaps as my old ones... so I'll have a spare set now and use the new ones since I have them

Also found the installed gap tolerance, but its the space once the rings installed on the piston for up and down play in the ring gap... I'll check that as well for giggles

I'm afraid you have lost me...

The gap that counts is in the cylinder.  Free gap is to check if the rings have overheated and lost wall pressure.  It is not a check for running gap.

At 85mm bore I would imagine that around 0.4 to 0.5mm would work.

In my experience, Yamaha always very clearly states the end gap with the ring (no piston!) installed square in the bore near the top of the cylinder.  (Specific instructions are spelled out in the manual)  This is the IMPORTANT measurement I'm pretty sure most of us have been discussing.

For the DT400B the spec is 0.012" minimum and 0.020" maximum with ring squared in bore about 3/4" from the top.
