Trying to visualize what you mean by "inside measurement (bar end to bar end)".
I would call bar end to bar end the width of the bars aka the "outside measurement".
What am I missing?

I imagine the measurement required as sitting on the bike and measuring between the inside of the bar ends, with the grips etc removed.

I still don't get it. The bar ends are the absolute ends of the bars so the measurement between them can only be the OUTSIDE width. The pic below shows the measurement between the bar ends as 29 3/4"... outside to outside.
You have an "inside" measurement for the lower bar that is clamped... you have an inside measurement of the opening at the upper height (crossbar level).
Where would you measure to get the distance between the "inside" of the bar ends?
I'm not trying to be difficult, just trying to understand what dimension is needed. Crossbar width?

My interpretation of inside would be a straight line across the top of the 'bars as shown in the second of the two sketches.

I agree that's likely the dimension being asked for... except for the term "inside" being used.
Anyway, the bars are the widest part of the bike so specs for bike max width in manuals should be pretty darn close to outside bar width dimension.

My apologies everyone, little to hasty in my question, so yes if you were to be sitting on the bike the measurement would be from the inside, measuring from end of bar to the other end of bar.
Im being told measurement is 32-33" for OEM bars.Just thinking someone out here has original bars and can confirm the distance.
thx again

Alan... From the Internet: "Inside measurements refer to the distance between two walls or surfaces, while outside measurements are taken from the outer edges of an object."
With respect Alan, I cannot imagine that even in the UK a measurement of the width of the bars could be correctly called an "inside" measurement. You're measuring from the outside end of one bar end to the outside end of the other bar end.
Huskyking, hopefully someone has some unmolested bars they can measure. Overall width of bike is listed as 35" so that should be very close to the handlebar width within a quarter inch or so.
Handlebar widths and bends are somewhat of a personal preference... many bikes, including Yamaha, came with really wide bars (35" is pretty wide) and it was common to cut an inch or so off each end... you couldn't take much more than that off because the crossbar width was also pretty wide and the grips and controls would no longer fit.
