I took out the shifter detent bolt and only a spring came out. It seems that other part may be stuck up in there - tough to see how to remove it. There's a large rubber bung in the end of the shaft but doesn't seem to come off - not sure I could see anything through there anyway

Should be a bullet-shaped detent in there, probably rusted in place. Maybe spray some liquid wrench or other rust dissolver in there, let it soak, then use a punch to tap it, and see it it will break loose?

Yes, part 22 is still in there. I tapped it a bit then sprayed it, I'll check it again tonight.

I wonder if stomping on the shift lever after a good soak may help it drop out as well. Put a metal catch pan under so you can hear it drop, and not lose it

No battery, just scratch the points, guaranteed to spark with ignition key 'on'. Good point about disconnecting lights, or could just unplug mag loom & run the 'mag loom black' straight to the plug coil, except no way to stop it if throttle sticks--rip wire off!!.

If you have the right side cover off you could try to force the drum to get the detent plunger to free. Never had one stuck but make me wonder how the rest of the internals are if its rusted in or corroded into the alloy. Looking forward to the first startup--even if stuck in neutral. Maybe put something up into it & give it a few taps might free it.

That pin seems to be jammed in tight - wish I could get at it from above.

When you either push the shift lever down into first, or up into second, the detent should push down. As I mentioned before, try pushing a bit harder up or down on the shift lever OR hold it down until it stops, then tap it with a small hammer. Also, can you see corrosion below it? If so you may have to try to clear that out somehow.

I'll have to get a bit more aggressive with it, no noticeable corrosion at the bottom, looks like a rounded surface.

I think there's a more serious issue afoot. That shifter will not work - it moves up and down about an inch and seems to always return to its position but it will not budge past that. I will break something soon if I don't try a different approach. What's involved in opening up the transmission? I'll start looking over the service manual
