Hi all,

does anyone have a good alternative to the string like sealing material used between the muffler and the spigot exiting the barrel? Mines none existent and it lets air by. I used holts exhaust putty as a temporary fix but it inevitably hardened, then disintegrated and fell out!

fyi , I’m not talking about the fibre washer between spigot and barrel.

cheers

Tom

It's still available from Yamaha for a couple of quid.

Nowadays you get a fixed length and cut it to size.

Whilst it isn't obvious at first sight, the exhaust collar comes apart, so that all the surfaces can be thoroughly cleaned.

I made a few spaghetti-like strings of high temp orange RTV, and let them dry on parchment paper. I also helped them dry by using a heat gun for a while. The next day I stuffed one of them around/inside the flange, then placed the pipe on to seat it. Then I took the pipe off and stuffed in another string of it, and put the pipe back on with new springs. That was about five or so months ago, and it's still sealed very well. I didn't disassemble the flange to clean it, but I did clean it out pretty well with a pick.

Here a link with a picture of Tom P's "silicone strings". Not sure exactly how he made them that nice... I'm not sure I could.

Thanks for finding that Mark. I just used the nozzle that came with the RTV and laid it down like caulk on parchment paper. I previously tried spreading RTV on twine, but it always burned up.

I copied the link to the picture... seeing if I can "repost" it here which shouldn't add to website storage.

That didn't exactly work...  trying again using "image" tool.
