That 'cylinder' must be the slide. It was just a thin hollow cylinder that had the spring inside. Ok that all make sense now. I didn't take it out all the way so I didn't see the connection at the bottom.

Pull the whole slide/needle/cable assembly out the top. Be very careful not to bend needle. You can leave it assembled to remove carb. Just let it hang to the side someplace.

Gr8uncleal... Yamaha R5's had spigot carbs as far as I remember?

Yes, my bad!

Put it down to my age and trying to do 14 restos concurrently!
Edit - I was getting the R5 mixed up with the RD125, both of which were in the kitchen at the time I put the carbs back on. RD125 (and 200) have flange mounted TK carbs, which have the main jet in the body of the carb.

Probably enough space to finesse jet out? But if not I've always thought the TK carb was a "budget" choice Yamaha made to keep cost and bike as affordable as possible.
