Bike starting when key is in off position.

My Rt360 had all of its wiring stripped off and stored in a bucket sometime in the 70s, my recent project has been trying to replace the wiring as it was new. Ive been following the official Yamaha wiring diagram as well as this forum's Dt/Xt universal wiring diagram without much luck. So far I have been able to get the horn working once, and I have been able to get the pilot light working as intended (off until key is turned into the full on position).

As it is, I feel as if one connection is wrong somewhere, as the bike will still start just fine when the key is turned in the off position or removed (as im sure is not intended). Any indication as to what I would need to correct to remedy this? I realize electrical problems are hard to troubleshoot over forum, thanks in advance.

Ignition kill simply grounds the black/white wire that goes from points to ignition coil

So either you don't have the wire from the key switch connected to the points wire or switch isn't grounding the wire when key is off.

Ok thanks, I just realized that when the original owner stripped everything off, he cut the black wire coming up from points and spliced it with the black wire coming off of the ignition coil since the key barrel wasnt there. Guessing thats part of my problem lol.

Your comment about "pilot light" also confused me.  I can't remember an RT having a pilot light that comes on with the key.  So I'm not sure what diagrams or manuals you're following or maybe what bike you're actually working on.  (Smaller bikes I'm more familiar with had neutral light and later models had low oil level light)

Anyway, wiring is stone simple on these bikes and all magneto points models have the same ignition kill where a wire tees into the points to coil wire and grounds to kill spark.

Basic wiring diagram...  components in blue circle are inside flywheel.  Red line is only stator wire needed to be connected.  You can see switched ground that tees into it.

Could you let us know what the frame/engine number(s) are, so that we can id exactly which model you have? It won't be a RT360, as no model with that name exists outside of the Japanese Domestic Market (model code 309, but I've never seen mention of an actual bike).

If it's a genuine 1973 model, it will be a RT3. However, Yamaha frames were often manufactured and date stamped up to a year before they were used, so it is possible that you might have a 1974 DT360A, but with 1973 stamped on the frame. The RT3 and DT360A are totally different bikes.
