1972 dt 250 was created by wbrewstersr@gmail.com
Hello everyone
I purchased a 1972 dt 250 back in February
I thought about selling it but I really like the bike so I
want to make it street legal
so I put it in the shop 3 months later nothing done to it
I brought it home today to try to hook up all the electrical
it has none right now I did find a dt 175 wiring harness that I think will work
anyhow my question is
I have 6 wires coming off the magneto yellow white green
green/red. Black. then a shorter black wire
can someone help me out on where they all go
any help is appreciated
thanks

Take a look through this shop manual. Should find the wiring diagram close to the end of the book.
I'm not familiar enough with the 250's to be able to shoot from the hip. I have more experience with the 125's and a75's.

Lucky for you, Yamaha used standard wire colors
Yellow = Headlight
Black = from points to coil (not sure what second black is, you might have to trace it down or leave it disconnected.)
Green = Daytime battery charge
Green/Red = Nighttime battery charge
White = not used. can replace green for higher day charge rate.
Please keep in mind that you need the proper switch to run the appropriate green AC charge wire through rectifier and yellow to headlight circuit.
There are several options to wiring up that might not use all the wires but you'll need to know what harness and corresponding switches you are going to use.

Don't panic with the second black, it's just there to make it easy to hook a meter to check the points opening moment for timing if you so desired. Should have a female covered connector on it unless its been cut off. Just joins in with the other black at the condenser most likely. Bike looks nice from what we can see. One minor point, if ya asking for parts don't say DT250 but call it a DT2. DT250 started in "74 with a complete makeover of motor & frame. Engine number would 'ID' it anyway. Enjoy your ride.

Yes, do NOT, repeat, do NOT plug in that sole black wire halfway up the generator harness into any of the bike's other black wires - you won't get a spark if you do.
I'm pretty sure that DEET here on the forum (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) supplies new wiring harnesses for the DT2.
