HT1 fork tubes - are there any options? was created by nersasian

Well, It's come time to pull apart the 1970 HT1 and do a restoration. The front fork tubes are 27mm and they are pretty pitted and look bad. I've been pretty lucky on the other badge bikes I have that I've never had to replace or refinish the fork tubes. These are so small that there doesn't seem to be an option to buy a new pair. I heard there are places that will take these original tubes in and refinish them (remove the rust, pitting, and rechrome).

Has anyone used anyone to do this? Looking for any recommendations.

Thanks,
Steve

One thing you can try, and you should really measure them carefully, is that Honda CG125 forks are plentiful on Amazon. They're 27mm, and at least for my DT100 are almost a direct drop in. I got a set for $50 CAD and although I haven't used them yet I kept them just because they're so close to the originals.

The internals of the CG125 forks appear to be very different than my DT100 forks, but for $50 maybe it's worth it just for the tubes. They might be able to be reused.

Did you have any trouble with the diameter of the tube changing after they re chromed it? I've got new seals to go back in, but they are for the 27mm tube. If you don't mind me asking, what did they charge you?

Thanks,
Steve

No, I measured them before sending and after i got them back. Exactly the same. If your worried then write the size on the paper you send with forks with your contact info, or let them know when you talk to them. Price was $ 206.00 including hazardous waste fee....Very reasonable!!

Yes, that's not a bad price at all. Thanks for the info.

They're possibly similar forks to a lot of smaller bike from back then. Here my 100 twin LS2. Could fit fork boots after cleaning yours up with emery cloth in the lathe then "nothing to see"--sorry that not cricket when restoring i know.

Here's my HT1 as found. Cleaned them up & never leaked. That's hard to believe looking at them so maybe not that bad lower down. Was a long time ago haha & son roadraced it too. Never had the head off, just freed it up--was pretty stuck but think just rings rusted to the bore from years sitting in the wet outside. Ran sweet. Great little bikes. photos.app.goo.gl/DDgrNT5ncCNywJBu6
