1970 RT1 engine case problem was created by nersasian

A few months back I was kicking over my RT1 and on the last kick, as the motor started, the kick starter stayed down. It didn't spring back up. The motor was running and before I could shut the motor down, the kick starter snapped back up with a loud bang. I was able to stop the motor at that point (after I got a nasty bruse on my leg from the kick back). I figured that the spring must have snapped, so I set it aside and waited until I had time to mess with it. The other day, I took it to a friend to open up the side case and see if it was just the spring, or what. Well, it turned out to be "or what". I've attached a picture of what he found. Looks like a stop bracket held on by 2 bolts is still there, but the case cracked right under the bolts.

So here is my question. Has anyone ran into this problem in the past? If so, what did you do to remedy this? This is a low mileage bike (3700) that I purchased from the original owner. Survivor condition, original paint, and I just put new tires, cables, brakes, to make it safe to ride. It's number's matching, so I really don't want to get a new engine. Can the right side case be repaired? If I can find a new right side case to replace the broken one, can I mate it up to the original left side engine case that is still good and has the vin number on it? Or do I have to replace the whole engine case? Any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I have a 1969 DT1 engine that is locked up sitting over in my parts pile. I know that some of the parts on the DT1 also work on the RT1. Can I use the right side case on the '69 DT1 to replace the right side case on my '70 RT1? I don't know if they are similar, so I'm hoping someone here that has more experience than I do, might have that answer.

Thanks,
Steve

My old iPad wont do photos if you put some up so I'll check later on desktop but short answer is DT1 won't work as cylinder long studs are differently spaced. I'll guess at this point that the damage is in the intermediate gear & its bearing in the case. I don't think it's relevant in your case but had you recently had the flywheel off?.

The weird timing of this post confuses how i feel about the world we live in and reality in general. I use a 1971 dt1 everyday to drive between my house and horses everyday at least twice to feed em. Bike started on the first kick every single time and i've never had an issue with the kick starter until right now. It is just really weird that someone else has the same problem and decides to post it on the same day it occurs to me. Im glad i read this post because i was about to push start the thing with the kick starter down. I guess ill take the engine out and see whats up instead.

#3 just pull the cover at this stage & see if you're lucky & 'might' be just the spring.

Steve you can use a 3rd party to post pictures ie Imgur, google photos etc. We would like to see what damage you have also just the right case can be replaced it doesn’t have any serial numbers so no problem

I had the flywheel off about a year ago, changed out the points. I've put about 100 miles on it since then. Why??

Trying to figure out how to send the picture I have. It's not letting me attach it here.

Also, good to know that I can get a new right side case (if I can find one) and still use my existing left side with the vin number on it. Thanks

Anyone out there have a right side case for a 1970 RT1 360 that they would be willing to sell me???
