71 DT1-E Charging Issue was created by justbeans

Hey all, I recently acquired a 1971 DT1-E from my late grandfather and am in the process of getting it working properly again after sitting for 30 years. Aside from some tank rust issues and some iffy mid-throttle performance, it runs decent now. However, I'm having an issue with charging/lighting and could use a bit of help. When the key is in "night mode", the lights won't even start to turn on until around 4k. One of the coils on the stator looks a little black, but it's also still giving spark(maybe not a break, but a little cooked so more resistance?). I'll include pics of the coils through the flywheel.

I've got two black wires coming from the loom(also yellow, green, green/red), but only one is connected up to the ignition coil. The other has a female end, but is just chilling, unconnected, and definitely shorter than the other. I'm not sure what this is for, but im sure it would be beneficial to know. I've also tested the rectifier, which is fine.

I'm leaning towards a bad stator, but I don't want to rule out a grounding issue either. Any help would be appreciated!

 from near Salisbury, UK.

Leave that single black wire with female well alone - it is not an earth, but something to do with ignition testing.

Your username reminded me that, back in the seventies, my youngest brother's nickname was "Beans".

The local newspaper asked various primary schoolchildren what their favourite meal was - he said his was sausage beans and chips, and so the men at the cricket club where we played nicknamed him "Beans".

Well, I can say that my reasoning for the name comes from a bit more complicated of a route, but it's crazy how things stick like that! I got nicknamed "Apple" in freshman year because I'd bring fruit to Algebra class for a snack. And I'm glad I did nothing with that wire then

Looking at the cooked coil i'd say you've found the issue. You could-- if you wanted--have a play with the wires from the other lighting charging coil but might have to cut any link to the burnt one & separately earth the remaining lighting charging coil. Probably get good usable lights but might leave nothing to keep battery up for indicators & DC stuff. Finer winding coil is ignition of course. I guess you have a sealed headlight where our ones down here in NZ had replaceable bulbs, therefore to get brighter lights with AC you go lower on the wattage. In our case if it had 35-35 & go to 25-25 brighter light but go down lower & lights would blow at revs. Nowdays people fit a bulb saving single wire 6 volt AC regulator, but i doubt you're at that stage & just want Voltage--give me volts, any volts haha.
Just guessing a bit without looking back in my book but from the mag loom--disregarding the black ignition & its spare black going nowhere--all other mag wires are branches from the lighting charging. No neutral light by memory so no light blue. Might need to unhook the rectifier to stop the battery charging dragging AC volts down. Just talking getting some lights.

Yes, I actually poked around and the coil moves freely on the core, so it looks like there's a break. Next question: Should I just buy a whole new unit, or try rewinding myself?
