Cracked Tachometer Drive Gear - '71 CT1-C was created by ajacstern23

Hi all,

Hope everyone is doing well. It has been sometime since I have posted here, have been messing around with a 1987 Yamaha FJ1200 restoration and upgrades recently. Went back and took a look again at my CT1, did a clutch spring replacement and noticed that the plastic drive gear for the tachometer is cracked in several different places. Not quite cracked all the way through, but it looks like it is getting there. I thought about using a 2 part epoxy to repair the gear but the cracks are so deep and I don't really want a gear falling apart inside of the engine. I guess the best thing to do is to replace it with a new part, but the new 248-17831-02-00 I found online was a whole $90 dollhairs, unbelievable. Is it worth replacing? Any alternative fitments? I did see a 248-17831-01 gear for sale at a good price that looks the same, but not sure if it fits the '71 CT1.

Thank you!

CMSNL has photos of both parts and the only obvious difference between the two is colour. However, this could well mean that "02" is made from stronger material!

"01" is the same colour as the one in your photos, so you should be ok fitting that. I would advise a close inspection of the part before buying, though, as the part could crack whilst being in storage for 40 odd years.

I think you can buy brand new ones from Yamaha still...  don't have time to browse CMSNL but as Alan says I think they are a different color (black?) plastic now?

Very very common part.  I still need to search my shed for an oil tank and I probably have several used ones someplace.  Should not be difficult to find.

Ah ok, makes sense. I called up the Yamaha dealer and they said the part had been discontinued so I ended up buying the white 01 model from Ebay. I checked the pictures for cracking and best I can tell it looks to be in perfect condition, besides probably being quite old. Will see if it holds up and just get one of the newer replacements if not. Thanks for the help!

As a side note, I was going through my parts bins and found a brand new set of front brake shoes, same ones that I ordered at the beginning of this week because I wanted to upgrade the front brake. Well now I have OEM and Vesrah semi-sintered to choose from I suppose (the SOK brake shoes are garbage by the way). The curse of too many parts haha.
