Can anyone shed some light?

I am getting close on my 1971 Yamaha DT1E MX restoration.  I have a question regarding the fork sliders.  I ordered new ones, part # 278-23144-50-00.  I received them but they have grooves on them for the chrome covers.  I remember them as being smooth with no grooves or ridges.

I basically have 2 questions.

1.  Were the originals smooth or did they have ridges for the chrome covers?
2.  I have never seen the chrome covers on the MX bikes can anyone confirm that is correct?
