Bent push rod was created by Schu
My CT1C came to me with a bent push rod. I’ve never had this happen on any of my bikes. What is the likely cause of this? It does have gouge near the bend point. Maybe the chain derailed…
I found a nice one on eBay with the ball, so I’m all set, but I don’t want to repeat the problem.

Usual a broken chain bunched up in there. But also the three screw plastic cover above over the selector drum retainer gets wiped off & can take the drum extensin with it--so you're lucky by the looks. Don't forget that little flat rubber piece that sits in the cover to stop dirt being fired into the mag from the chain.

Yes that white plastic cover has some serious scrapes on the side nearest the chain. So I’m going to assume it was the chain that bent the push rod. And thanks for the reminder on the black filler piece that sits in the cover. Mine is hard plastic, unless it used to be rubber 51 years ago!

Ok, yep, i'll go with plastic. Might pay to remove that three screw cover if the screws look new & make sure no damage underneath.

Already removed it, mainly because I was curious as what was behind it. The cap is still good. Just scraped on one side. I panicked when a part fell out, but it was obvious to see how the C shaped piece fits and acts as the retainer. But again, thanks for the insight.

Make sure thin shim washer is under retainer... I think someone's been in there because the "horseshoe" style retainer didn't show up until CT2 or 3 if I remember correctly... earlier models had two halves held by snap ring... horseshoe style can be retrofitted so you're okay.

Interesting…. Since someone fitted the horseshoe style retainer, does it still need the thin shim washer, because there was none.

Yep shows it on "70 to "73 No15. Reasonably thin. Hope it's not been apart & fitted on the inside. If that's the case there's likely no room behing the retainer as drum will be pulled over away from the outside. Don't worry too much [now i've worried you]. Be more worried if it was a thick spacer.

I will take the plastic piece off again tomorrow and have another look now that I see where the thin shim washer goes. It might very well have been there and held in place with a film of oil.
Thanks Fellas!
Ah what the hell. I’ll go check now, pajamas and all. I left the heat on in the garage anyhow, so I need to dial it down a bit. Stay tuned.

Nope. No thin shim washer. Actually, the fit on the horseshoe piece would hardly allow for a shim unless it is paper thin.
Edit:
hmmmm. I have no gasket under the white plastic piece either. So if I’m buying a gasket I might as well buy the shim if it’s available. But then I could make my own gasket……
