Yamaha 1972 LT-2 and LT-3 Oil Check? was created by Ironranger88

Looking though all of the literature I have and cannot find a definitive answer. When checking the oil on these old bikes, do I put it upright (straight up and level) or on the side stand?  Then, do I check without screwing in the dip stick or not?
- I see that the quantity is 1.3 quarts, but of what lube?  I've heard 10W-30, is that correct?
- I've been using a "racing injection 2 stroke oil"  for the "auto-lube" (oil pump/ oil tank)  works great!

THANK YOU!

I don’t know if I do it right either but I put in the amount it says on the clutch cover when I do an oil change. I think the LT says 700cc’s or about 3/4 of a quart. When I do check with the stick I put the bike level but don’t screw it in.

Check the oil level with the bike upright, off the kick stand and don't screw in the dip stick. It's a dip stick, not a screw in stick. I use Yamaha's oil and have put 10w-40 in my transmission as Yamaha no longer offers 10w-30.

Just getting back into enduros after 40 years and have read so much by searching the forums here that I thought that I read that it should be checked after bike is warm/hot?

The owner's manual spells it out fairly clearly.

Challenge is the last BOLD statement...  since these bikes were new oil manufacturers have been mandated to add "slippery" additives to many motor oils.  Stay away from any "energy conserving" oils and safest is to use one specifying safe to use with wet clutches.  Probably hundreds of posts on the topic here.

Other thing is it can take some time for level to settle...  so the "warm up" is important...  many just put the recommended amount (700cc not 1300) and call it okay as long as it's not reading low.

Oh and 10w40 is fine...  and might be required as it's one of the weight grades exempted from having the slippery additives.  Some 10w/40's could still have slippery additives though.
