DT 1 engine seal replacement was created by type one

   Hi Guys …

Im not sure about changing the engine seals on my early ‘68… ok so it’s 54 years old and they look original but appreciate they may cause issues being so old  … my concerns are;

1. it’s a non circlip seal on the clutch side …are the seals different across the 68-70 DT 1 model for with and without circlip? I don’t want to remove it and then the replacement doesn’t fit..
2. If the seals are an issue trying to start or ride I don’t mind breaking it down again to replace if needed, as long as I won’t cause a catastrophic failure by not replacing??
3. If I do replace what is the best removal process to get the seals out ??

thanks
T1

I have a '71 DT1E

Mine had sat forever, but the bottom end and the bearings were in good shape so I replaced crank and all other seals.  Also lucked out that bore was in spec STD and piston really nice so I lightly honed and put together with new rings.  If I recall, per pic I had a big internal snap ring holding crank side seal in, but not one on the magneto side.  Seals are a snap to remove and replace.  I carefully pried them out and then used crank puller to nicely draw seals into cases vs. a driver and hammer.  I hope you luck out on the bearings too, you have a really nice motor to look forward to, I love mine!

ps don't forget to put in a new oring #20 under crank pinion
