1971 ATC Spark Plug & Oil Question was created by Challene
Hi my name is Challene,
I inherited a 1971 Yamaha Enduro ATC. It has been sitting for 40 yrs in a garage. I am just trying to get it running but have a couple quick questions.
#1 - Spark Plugs - I have two spark plugs but only one wire running to one plug. Is that normal? I thought I read somewhere that the other is just a back up? which is so weird to me if that is true.
#2 - Oil - what type of oil does this run on? I read 10W 30 but then I thought I read someone talking about mixing the oil and gas? So what is correct? do I use a 10W30 or do I have to do a gas / oil mixer? If I have to do the oil/gas mixer what is the mixer ratio?
Thanks for the help!

Re the two plugs. Yes, only one used. Some use the additional hole to carry a spare, but originally there would have been a blanking plug (basically a bolt with washer) fitted. Size is 14mm diameter (referred to as M14) and 22mm long - basically the same size as the threaded part of the spark plug.
Assuming that your bike is standard and still has the two stroke oil pump fitted and connected, the oil tank with the filler cap under the seat should be filled with two stroke oil and the gearbox with oil suitable for use with a motorcycle clutch - filler cap is just behind the kick start.
It's well worth the time to look at the parts lists on Partzilla and CMSNL and the service and owners manuals in the Tech Library on this forum (see top toolbar).
Please post some photos and change the front and rear brake shoes!
I would suggest checking with the members here first, before buying any parts, just to be sure (we've ALL ended up with wrong parts at one time or another!

And not because we're idiots; it's because people selling parts mislabel them and want to make it seem that any part they have fits YOUR bike!
Yamaha 2S is a good oil for the oil tank to use through the oil pump. I'd drain the 40yo oil first from the tank and then refill. Be sure to bleed the oil pump before you start the bike up and run it. (Instructions [very easy] in the manual in the tech library in the tool bar above). 10W30 is useful for a couple of things like lubing the innards of the cables. But yes, the transmission must have something approved for wet motorcycle clutches.
Good luck. Ask away.

Just oh by the way, the red dust boots on the front forks are not original and may be hiding rust on the fixed upper sliders or replacing the original black dust boots which are much shorter and better looking.
And you may have kick starter issues. I say that just because the lever on the right side is angled at about 9:00 instead of about 12:15 or so. Not a hard fix. You can do it; we can help.

So I am not new to vintage vehicles. I am 3rd owner and it is really good condition.

Thanks for pointing out the dust boots I didn't realize those were not original. I will take a look at the kick starter and see if it has issues.
