1970 RT1 Handelbar light/horn switch was created by nersasian

Hello everyone,
Trying to fix a few things on my RT1 and I was just wondering if anyone had a good "high/low & horn" switch that is located on the left handelbar next to the compression release? Picture below. Or where I might be able to find one? Also, this RT1 has the original Dunlap tires on it (in good shape), I want to take them off and save them. Where is the best place to buy similar tires on the internet? I want to stay with a similar enduro/trials tire.     Thanks,

Steve Nersasian

You can try this "master tire thread," or you can use the search forum across the tool bar, under 'forums.'

Those switches are fragile, rare, and tend to be quite expensive if you do find one ($200+ range unless you get lucky)  You could check with DEET and see if he can rebuild yours.

It can be replaced with the more common later 71-73 switch.

The switch in the photo cannot be repaired without reconstructing the dimmer swich handle.
I would not be able to do that.
There was some talk about reproducing the switch. My guess is it won't be done because it is made up of 21 unique parts.
At $1000 per part to make the tooling, that would be a $21,000 investment before you made the first switch. Now you need to produce runs of the individual parts.
Next you need someone to assemble them.
If each part was an average $1 to produce (without tooling cost) that's $21 per switch. Add $5 to assemble.
Now let's assume there is a 1000 piece minimum.
$21 + $5= $26...... $26x1000=$26,000......$26,000 + $21,000=$47,000 cost to make 1000 switches
Next is profit.... $47 x3= $141 per swich sell price.
$8 shipping
Total would be $149 per switch
If (big IF) the actual market was 300 switches (delete shipping), that would be $42,300.

So whoever decided to take on this endeavor would be losing  $5,000 on the investment.
They don't want to do that, so increase the price to break even.... $5,000 divided by 300= $17

Now the switch would cost you $165 just to allow the investor to break even.... they would be foolish to do all this without at least doubling their money.
Now we are at $158x2=$316.... plus shipping...... $324.
Next they realize they will have to pay someone to ship out 300 switches, so they give them $5 each.
They have to cover income taxes....say 30%..... now we are at...... are you ready?

$419 per switch

WOW, that is a great explanation! Shows the value of a good parts bike. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one, thanks.

I have a crusty one in stock, all there too.
It would need to be rebuilt by DEET tho....

AND it would not be cheap in crusty form from me.
