Good grief, what a dreadful mess and incredible that you walked away not too badly injured.  Pleased to hear you are okay, and what a testament to the protective clothing available to motorcyclists nowadays.  My partner Shirley was a motorcycle instructor (all categories...and all weathers !!) for 17 years and she rides in a very safe, anticipatory manner.  However I'm delighted she has very recently retired because it doesn't matter how safe and experienced you are there is absolutely nothing you can do about being rear-ended.  The roads are only getting busier, and the general standard of driving is definitely deteriorating.  Add to this the 'distractions' of mobile phones in cars, all leads to more and more motorcyclists being injured.  The message is, keep motorcycling of course BUT wear quality protective gear ALL the time.
