Oil Pump Rebuild Recommendations was created by rt31973

I am looking for recommendations on when to rebuild my oil pump? Mine appears to be working fine and does not leak but I am concerned because it is the original pump in my 1973 RT3. My bike has 6,000 miles on it. I have replaced the hose to the engine, the hose to the oil tank and the banjo connection hose gaskets. Thank you for your suggestions.
Here are some pictures of my pump.

Contact member DEET.... I can't think of any better source for oil pump rebuild or advice.

Even a NOS pump won't be as good as a DEET rebuild because after all these years the internal grease and seals on the NOS pump would be suspect.

Agreed with MarkT - DEET is your man.

On the other hand, I am running either original or used pumps in all my enduros, without any issues. If there are no leaks and it is pumping well, it is probably still in good condition as the oil in the pump is the lube, and there really is not a lot of wear. The biggest problem is sitting, sitting with water in there, and sitting.

It is the old use it or lose it principle.

I am not sure if the RT and DT oil pumps are the same but I found a rebuild kit

DEET has not been converted yet. He has visited a couple of times but left no breadcrumbs. It will take a concerted effort to let him know his services are needed here :)

Your pump looks to be in very good shape
from the outside, although there appears to be
some seepage on the inside of the white prime wheel(blue tint).

Was there oil-buildup along the bottom when you first took the case cover off?

Usually Dirt, Sand and Water will start the pumps to leaking, over time.

If it is not leaking, I would leave it alone.
(You don't see too many threads on Oil Pump Failures).

If you changed the hoses, prime it, add premix on the first tank
then check the hose into the side of the cylinder, to make sure
the pump is lifting oil.

Ditto, I rebuilt mine because it was leaking otherwise I would have not done a thing.

This is a great forum. I really needed to hear all of the comments and recommendations. I am leaning to not rebuilding but I went ahead and looked up the parts I was previously told to use the diagram for a 1969 AT1E for the parts. Counting the 10% AMA discount, I can get most of the parts from Bike Bandit for $23 plus shipping of $9. However, it does not appear that a rebuild is needed. Thanks to everyone for the recommendations.

.

Good call . . .

Unless the pump has been exposed to long periods on sunlight, water, or extreme heat, then there's no need to mess with it.
6000 miles is nothing for one of these pumps . . . I've seen them still working fine on street bikes with over 30K.

Does anyone know if DEET is still repairing pumps and if so, how to reach him? Or, anyone providing a service rebuilding these pumps?
TIA
