79’ DT175 clutch reassembly. was created by GTP091

Quick question on reassembly of the clutch pack.  While putting the cap on or whatever it’s called I torqued the 5 bolts that hold the clutch springs down based on the spec I found for this and ended up breaking 2 of the bolts. I’m very sure I had the torque wrench set correct to the 5ftlbs or 60 inlbs but they still broke. I’m wondering if they were overtightened preciously and just my dumb luck they snapped. Either that or the spec I found of 5ft lbs is wrong.  They’re cheap enough to replace and I will certainly replace all 5. Any tips on this? Was the spec wrong?

I just snug them down hand tight with a screwdriver.

Not sure if that spec is correct or a misprint... but I do know that most torque wrenches are not accurate at the lowest setting so that could be a factor as well.

Ya hand tight does make sense. It seemed a bit excessive while I was doing it.  But 5ftlbs is not really all that tight either, it’s about 1/3 up my torque wrench scale ( I have an inch pounds TW).  I did find the same spec listed on page 71 of the service manual which is the same as what I found in the first place on the ole inter webs.  I should have just done them up nicensnug.  When I replace with new bolts I think I’ll do em up by hand and see what the wrench says they’re set to and bring them all to the same spec. Maybe 5 is a bit much. Or the PO just overdid em.

Early Yamaha manuals are filled with spec and UOM errors...

Looking up general torque specs for 5mm bolts reveals 60 in-lb seems very tight...  and as most of us here that have some experience know, those bolts are very easy to break with a wrench.  If they are grade 8.8, 45 in-lb seems more reasonable...  which just so happens is about 5 n-m. (not ft-lb).

All should have the same built-in spacer height and should be threaded in to where that spacer bottoms against the post. I've been snugging them down with a screwdriver (probably about 40 in-lb) for decades and never had one come loose.

35in lbs seemed about right to me so 40 makes complete sense. Thanks for responding. I did order 5 new screws from Yamaha. Not unreasonable at 5.45 a piece. I did contemplate just getting 5mm screws from ye ole hardware store and reusing the washers to save a few dollars but decided against it. I did justify the cost as I made my own paper side cover gasket which is about the same cost as the screws..

Probably broke because last time they were off somebody way overtightened & stretched them then you drew the short straw. Used to happen with DT1's but the first model by memory had 5mm thread stepped screws so was asking for trouble.
