Thoughts on front brake upgrade to a disc brake?

Once again I tried to search first and didn’t find anything useful.

I posted earlier about hydraulic levers and now I’m curious about front brakes and if anyone out in the forum has done an upgrade to disc brakes. I’m guessing it would probably cost a fair amount and would require a new front rim and lots of custom work.

I would love to hear about any success or failures that others have experienced.

Thanks

I think you would be looking at grafting on to whatever model you have an entire front end assembly from another later model bike. Typically I believe the later models have a longer travel suspension at both ends, so doing that may create a situation where you have raised the front of the bike more than expected.

With regards to grafting a disc from say, a '73 RD350, look at the diameter of the fork tubes of what you have and compare (if memory serves the fork tube diameter of the RD350 is 34mm, but don't hold me to it). I think the tubes of my '74 360A are also 34mm, so if I wanted a disc from an RD, the tubes "should" fit my triple clamps.

Get the idea?

Here's one of many lists of fork tube diameters on the internet.  www.dotheton.com/index.php?threads/fork-...iameters-list.20950/

Be aware while searching that most (if not all) of the "Enduro" models with disc front brake not only had longer travel but also had leading axle forks...  you need to use the correct triple clamps with leading axle forks and that would require denting the fuel tank of of your DT for clearance...

Thanks for the advice. I did some research and found that it is possible but like you guys have stated. I don’t think it’s worth the headaches and the necessary modifications to the bike. I believe I’ll keep it as is.
appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Replied by AirborneSilva on topic Thoughts on front brake upgrade to a disc brake?

I read somewhere that someone did successfully put a later model front end on I think it was a DT175 circa 1980 and made it work but wasn't a straight forward swap.

What is your bike chrome fork stem size?
A 30mm inner fork have many selection, RX series all models with disc brake use 30mm,.
So you could use your old handle crown and triple three.

For 31mm ,they are available.
Honda Raider 135 (HX135) use 31mm,
Maybe old MBX125 share the same size too, and NSR150

. NSR150 first models use 18 inch spoke wheels, they shares from HX135.
Later NSR 150 models got alloy sports rims .

It's the easiest one to do. They are little shorter than DTs inner fork of course .
I don't know if DTs 31mm chrome inner forks would screw direct fit onto those housing, as ppl around me just do direct swap and they would add those risers on top of the chrome stem.

Fitting woven linings to your existing SLS brake shoes, will improve braking significantly. Some YZ models used TLS front brakes, and if you could find a front wheel, that would provide an even better brake.

Just newly found and read your other thread, you looking to fit them on your DT1 250cc bike was it? If so,

34mm inner fork stem is used on Yamaha FZ150i , little shorter.. they should be fairly okay as long you didn't do any jumping with the bike as they ment for On road bike kinds . Most of these bikes didnt have thick metal for their chrome fork stems
