Hi from Minnesota, seems a wiring project ahead of you and yer son, do find the manual up in the tool box and spend time just looking through it. The wiring section in the back is small print… find a way to enlarge it, study it.
It’ll be a fun project, especially, the first rip!

Wiring, yes. The bane of my existence when I was restoring my cl350. The only wiring it had was the stator wires and NO electrical components. The wiring harness I got did not match color codes from the service manual. Lots of tracing. The sky over the barn is still blue with profanity. lol

Welcome, from Long Beach California!
I also have a 1972 DT2 250, which I just got running fairly well.
This being my first motorcycle and having zero mechanical experience with them, these vintage enduros ive come to find are fairly forgiving to work on, given an abundance of time and patience... This yamaha-enduros forum is one of the main reasons ive been able to get the bike running.
Theres a gold mine of information on this site, provided by people who have been riding and working on these bikes since your sons age.. or even younger.
Happy to keep an eye out for your posts and chime in where I can.
Good luck!
