Hi All,
Hi All,
I have just joined the group. Today I collected an unwanted 1977 DT175 in pretty shabby shape that hasn't run for quite a few years. I am hoping to get it going and then do some tidying up to get it roadworthy.
I haven't been able to get a spark and was wondering if the bike needs a battery to start and run. It doesn't have one at the moment.
My first bike was a 1975 DT175 which I bought new which was a great little machine so I have a bit of a soft spot them and hope to be able to revive the the one I picked up to today
Any advice greatly appreciated. I have just joined the group. Today I collected an unwanted 1977 DT175 in pretty shabby shape that hasn't run for quite a few years. I am hoping to get it going and then do some tidying up to get it roadworthy.

If you haven't done so already, I would clean the faces of the points.
If you end up having to buy new ignition parts, then try and buy from a reputable source - there are quite a lot of crap repro parts out there now.

Welcome to the group. You will find many knowledgeable people here. (I am not one of them) They have been very helpful for me.
Good luck with your project.

It might be helpful to know what country you're from and a VIN number. There was no 1977 model DT175 in the USA
1963 YG1-T, 1965 MG1-T, Allstate 250, 1970 CT1b, 1971 R5, 1973 AT3MX, 1974 TS400L, 1975 RD350, 1976 DT175C, 1976 Husqvarna 250CR, 1981 DT175G, 1988 DT50, 1990 "Super" DT50, 1991 RT180, 2017 XT250

I'm in Australia. I'll check on the VIN. The good news is I now have spark after cleaning up a few things. I have just removed, cleaned and refit the carby. The float had stuck . With a bit of luck it might run today. Lots of other things yet to clean up. It had been sitting in a shed for a very long time, so lots of rust, dirt, grease and insect nests to clean off yet. I wasn't going to do very much cosmetically until I get it to run.
