DT360 vs. MX360 engine? was created by msavitt

what if anything could one take off of a MX360 engine to perk up a DT360, knowing that the MX360 engine does not have carb or pipe?

I am assuming this is a waste of time, but wanted to ask just to be sure.

thank you

It could work, but I can't say for sure.  Just a cylinder head swap is probably a bad idea, too much compression for pump fuel.  Both the cylinder head and the barrel might work, but it might also require the mx360 pipe to work as intended.  I know an rt2mx top end works well on an rt1 bottom end.  But without the right pipe, the power band isn't in a friendly place.  Beyond that, the gearing won't favor the peakier power band, so it could very well become less fun to ride.  From my personal experience, it might not be worth it.

I've used an Enduro pipe and carb with MX top end on a 175 and it worked okay.  Not as good as correct pipe and carb but definitely ran better than stock.  Completely different engine though.

You might look through TurboDan's posts as I believe he experimented with the MX360/DT360 combo.  Pistons might be rare but RacerClam posted a shop that had new Wiseco's made...  Athens Cycle or something like that.

The MX360 certainly makes more power. The low-mid power is suppressed compared to the DT and it must be revved higher to get moving. The stock pipe, carb and intake won't support higher horsepower so you'll have to change these up as well.

The best option is a ported DT cylinder. The MX cylinder is tuned to make power from about 6000 to 8000, you can't really moderate that. It is what it is.

FYI - below is piston info for the 360 that I set aside so I wouldn't need to scour the forum if my RT3 ever needs a new one. Text came from a facebook group, but it may be the same as mentioned by racerclam.

Athens Sportscycle in Athens Ohio has brand new Wiseco pistons that they had made for the 360’s in 80.50mm and 81.00mm . 740-592-1692 and ask for Ryan Moore.

one thing I always found fascinating about the MX360 engine was the balance shaft set up. this was implemented to reduce Rider fatigue in racing so one could also assume this would reduce fatigue on the road. the DT360 cases have all of the spots machined in the case to accept the balance shafts but they were not included in order to save costs on the mass production machine, the balance shaft setup was not well liked back in the day because of the lack of chain tensioner creating noise and wear, but I've thought to add one in there by drilling a mounting hole through the bottom of the case like Harley-Davidson primary chain slider.

great info...the DT360 in my opinion over 6 or 7k is not fun, so I am going to ditch the MX idea, I like riding it in tactor mode....but if I were to get my hands on a complete MX360 engine (1973), would all the balancing paraphernalia fit the stock '74 DT360 cases  and crank?  That would def be a huge comfort improver if so

I wonder if the mx360 crank is balanced to a different factor in line with running the balancer--but i've go no idea & just guessing.
Only saying 'that' incase the balancer makes the DT vibes worse--unless you run the mx crank!!.
Part number comparison for crank wheels might give a clue.

It's likely you could use the MX360 bottom end with balancer and use the DT360 top end (and DT trans if wanted)?

Smaller bikes have a lot of that type of interchangeability, not sure if 250/360 did too.
