1975 Yamaha DT175: Only runs Full Throttle was created by doxiemotoco
Hey there! Question, could someone help me Identify why my DT won't run properly.
Details: 1975 Yamaha DT175 , Vape 12V System, has fresh gas, has new air filter, boots around carb and air box are sealed, has spark, new spark plug, burned out carbon in exhaust.
Won't start unless I fully hold throttle open max, and when it does run, tons of white smoke, barely wants to stay on, won't idle, and runs erratic. Will not run without my hand on the throttle. So far, my research on other bikes online is that it's possible the carb is now dirty (I cleaned it a few months ago and I've only ever used non-ethanol fuel). Other issues i'm thinking could be the throttle cable could be incorrectly adjusted? Bike also does not kickover first kick, sounds different when I fully pull throttle open. Float height could also be off because when I cleaned it I could have messed it up? I'm really not sure what might be going on. Any ideas? Thank you all very much. Can't wait to get this badass bike kickin' up rocks.

Crank seal pushed out on the right side. Shortest answer i've ever given lol. Could be wrong--again.
Then i start editing lol. Could be a broken reed petal [complete petal broken off not just a chip]. Still say crank seal [white smoke etc].

Sounds like your right side crank seal is bad what does the spark plug look like oily?
Me and RT325 are thinking alike and typing at the same time

White smoke, runs at high RPM, doesn't't start easily?
What RT325 said above^^^. Has all the markings of lean condition/crank seal.
Pretty easy fix.

Oof, I’ll check it out to tomorrow and let you all know what it is, I know the reed valves were fine when I put them back in so probably not that. As for crank seal, I’ll see if that’s it, I’m guessing visually it’ll have oil all around it?

Visualy it'll be popped out of the case when you pull the clutch cover [RH cover]. More than just leaking.
If its not that [& i think it is] then go to the left side seal. But severe smoke & everything you say points more to 'that' RH side.
Drain transmission oil first of course as it's that--that is being drawn in to the crankcase.

Thanks RT325, I’ll check into it tomorrow, hopefully it’s an easy job lol chasing electrical gremlins with the headlight and gauge lights and this have been a headache. Thanks for the help so far!
