76 DT400 swingarm bushing removal was created by AirborneSilva
Hi guys, so I'm finally doing the restoration on the DT400, got the swing arm off no problem (was a pleasant surprise), but now how do I get the bushings out? The manual says to put a long rod in and knock them out but there's an inner rod (#2 on the partzila diagram -

), so so I need to get that inner part pressed out?

#2 is the sleeve the bushings "should" be rotating on... it's longer than width of arm so if swingarm bolt is tight it will be clamped tight.
In other words it should slide out easily.

Thanks Mark, the swingarm bolt came out pretty easily so it's not an issue. So the sleeve should just slide out then?

I tried tapping on it with a rubber mallet and a large punch, didn't budge

I used my garage door spring winding rods as a long punch to tap the bushings out

Likely if the arm bolt came out easily it's all been rotating on the bolt--which aint good. So now the fun begins with a seized in spacer, inner bush part. Find a piece of steel solid bar & step it to fit on a little. Make the OD not larger than inner bush thingy. ok i give in, they call it a collar in link below. So collar has to come out for a start. With the tool you'll have to make--drive it out. Hope i'm exagerating & it comes out without too much grief!!.

If they are nylon, can the bushes be heated up and melted (ie destroyed)? This (accidently) happened on one of my early resto bikes thirty or more years ago, on a swing arm that I sent off to be powder coated!

Thanks Morley, I'll see what I can come up with to make the tool you suggested. Alan, I did think of heating it up and see if If will melt the bushing, or at least get them to the point of being soft enough to allow the collar to be driven out.

Ha, yes as Gr8uncleal says, & i didn't think of that haha. Sometimes the simplest answer is the hardest to see. I'd do that if it won't drive out. On the other hand if it will come out then might all be re-usable with a clean up & lube.
Just thinking after writing that--if its all been turning on the bolt-shaft it'd pay to check the overhang needed to be able to move when bolted up as it should be when cleaned up & lubed. Need a bit of clearance into the cups on the end.

Being able to reuse that collar is my hope as there don't seem to be any available. I've looked at feebay and there are some swingarms but there's no guarantee they will be any better than what I've got.
