Must apologise as it sounds ridiculous but i literally
know nothing about electrics, im good with basic
principles of a engine but could someone explain
the basics of the multi meter please... what i need to
Know to test items ect??

Hopefully your multimeter came with instructions. These, when read in conjunction with the test procedures shown in the service manuals, should get you on your way.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you Tim but am learning thanks to people like Mark T. There's some videos on youtube, that I could certainly use to watch and probably will. Here's a link to one, discalimer - I haven't watched it yet so don't know how good it is...

For your motorcycle you will probably only use it to measure volts direct current (VDC) looks like a V- on your meter (not Alternating Current VAC V~) and resistance (omega symbol). You usually set it for a value/range slightly higher that the value that you are expecting to measure. I am sure there are some good basic videos out there.
