Many were removed.  It was the "cool"* thing to do as many motocross bikes ran without.

I think we went a round of this a while back and Speed and Sport Inc in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania had several new ones still for about US $70?

*actually I think the word might have been "boss" back then.
