Carb/throttle cable problem was created by mbutchers
So, I've been rebuilding my bike over the past few months. It seems I have a few anomalies with the original parts, and the latest to rear it's head is the carb (maybe) I've got a new slinky glide throttle cable and it doesn't fir correctly. When installed, the carb slide is being held up off of the stops because the cable isn't long enough. I check the old cable and it had been lashed up. The insert for the carb top is much shorter than the original, but this had been cut away from the original cable. The insertion length is 14mm on the old and 6mm on the new. Obviously I can't install the circlip to hold the cable in. Maybe I've been given the wrong cable? But, I have no reference. Or maybe the carb is incorrect. It has 500 61 stamped on the body. I believe this is correct. Any pointers greatly received. See attached photos.

500 61 is correct for a USA 1975 DT400, or possibly a 76. Is that what you have?

As JayB pointed out... only you know what you're working on.
That carb top looks correct for a DT400. Cable doesn't.

That short brass piece would have had a short 45 degree elbow with threads... original cable would have threaded on to that. It was a separate part and not part of the cable.

That's annoying. How much too short is it. I'd be trying to get some length from somewhere without trying to shorten the outer. Can you unscrew the adjuster & pull the cable out with its gliding piece through the bend, then--can you shorten the threaded bit then re-thread the bend tube as close to the bend as you can get. Or find an old adjuster piece to fit up from inside to screw the cable adjuster on up top--screwed up solid to the carb top & then adjust free play at the twist grip. That reads a bit mickey mouse sorry--only 'i' know what i mean lol.

Haha… no, I understood what you meant. I’m pretty resourceful as I work in a resto shop, but was trying to get to the bottom of the problem. If it’s a cable fault, then I shall return it.

Look in the parts list to see the elbow that clips into cap and is not part of the cable.
Then look at HVC Cycle to see cable that threads onto elbow.
Technically someone could make a cable with an integral elbow like the one you bought... but it would need to be long enough for the tall cap and the stub that clips into cap would need to be long enough.
It's possible you could get what you have to work by sourcing a short cap and short slide... I've done that before with parts I had lying around.

Hi Ht1kid.
We do E Types and old school Fords - mainly Mk1 Escorts (Mexico, Twin Cam etc). Lots of other stuff too. Currently have a DB5 and a 70s DBS in for some mods.
