DT250B ignition crossroads was created by leiflarsen

Hey folks,

I have a 1975 DT250B that sat beside a friend’s garage for ages. One day he just asked me if I wanted it and before I could think things through it was in my shed.

It’s been almost 2 years and I’ve got the bike kinda back to showroom spec. There’s new paint and decals everywhere…cleaned up wheels and brakes…new tires.

I’d been wrestling with a very ratty ignition system…when I noticed the magnets on the flywheel were loose. I figured a bit of a cleaning and some loctite would fix that right up …. Only the magnets crumbled in my hands as soon as they were away from the flywheel.

I’ve been looking for a new flywheel on eBay (FOTO1971) but no luck. Searches for alternatives have not yielded clear answers. People I’ve spoken to about finding replacement magnets look at me like I’m smoking something.

There is part of me that just wants to buy an electronic ignition and be done with it.

So I’m consulting the group. Is electronic ignition the way to go? Any recommendations for a system that comes with a new flywheel? Any suggestions on sourcing a new flywheel or magnets?

The bike will be used mostly for very short rides….maybe a few times a month. I’ll probably take it to a few vintage shows,

Thanks in advance!

I didn’t look everywhere but speed and sport has two of them. Not cheap at $500. I’ll look around some more.

Found one on ebay thanks to a keen-eyed forum member who spotted a mis-labelled one. Bought it for a song...and...need I say more.

Should mention, this is with no tuning...and just a squirt of gas in the carb.
