air filter parts was created by Jbeebe

Hi everyone, I'm sorting out the airbox on my '74 dt250...

I ordered a used airbox off ebay but it didn't come with a filter. Do I order just the filter element or is there a cage/screen that it goes around for rigidity?

Looking at #2 on the diagram below, it appears as though the triangular filter is rigid:

But on the part number images it looks much more flexible:

Here's the UNI filter replacement picture:

Is there a cage or screen that goes in the airbox to provide support for the filter, or do the replacement filters come rigid enough to just slide in the airbox and stay put?

Thanks!

Yes there is a screen cage the filter goes over... I recently bought a "bike in a box" 74 DT 250A and it was there... It'll be a few days before I can get out to the shed and take a pict. of it...
There is a chance that I will be "rat rodding" this bike... then I'll have some stuff to send down the road that can help someone around here..

The Yamaha filter is just the foam. It requires a cage. The Uni-filter is complete with the cage already inside. There are differences in filters and filter oil and I won't start that here. Use what you think is best. I always stick with Genuine Yamaha.

Yes the original Yamaha filter requires the cage, in my opinion the Yamaha filter with the cage is the best option, the cages both metal mesh screen and plastic 74-76 DT250, 360, 400 all the same part come up on eBay quite often. I have used  a K&N filter (no mesh screen required) before with no apparent bad side effects, pretty much the same price once you buy the oem filter and find and buy a screen. I have no experience with the Uni filters but have read that they are sometimes too restrictive.

Sneezle thanks for the picture of the cage, that's what I was expecting to be in there and was surprised when I didn't see it in the parts diagram.

lizeec, i saw those K&N filters and the only reason I didn't get it was because the UNI filter was cheaper. thanks!

Not to hijack the post but curious if the CT2 should have a cage as well. There’s a center post going through the middle of the air box and the Yamaha filter doesn’t come with a cage.

Next question...

What supports the airbox on the left side? Just the intake tube? On the right side there is the rubber bushing and bolt but on the left there is just a pin. I don't see a hole for the pin to go into. As you can see in the pic, the pin is next to a rubber hole that looks right, but it's parallel to the pin. I'm not sure if that hole is for something else or for the pin and is just bent.
