Looking for the correct fork fluid and amount.  Same for gear case oil.  Is anyone using aftermarket fluids not from Yamaha?  This will be going in a 1974 DT360A.  Thanks to all that respond.

complete Yamaha factory service manual on tech page for free!
got one of these, forks are 175cc per leg, transmission 1000cc of wet clutch compatible oil.  I use 10w40 as anything thicker is a drag here in S OC
love to see a picture of your bike!

Thank you for the reply.  Is there a particular brand of fork and gear fluid you like best? The pictures are from the day we took it home a few weeks ago.  I was lucky enough to get it from the original owner.  It has about 3700 miles on it.  Needs the usually work from aging.  I have most of the parts coming from Speed and Sport Yamaha in PA.  I will be registering it and riding it in the spring.  My first motorcycle was a 1979 mx100 back in 1982 so when my coworker told me about this bike I really wanted to restore it.

Welcome!

Please know that "oil threads" are kind of a legend on forums...  they can turn into heated discussions of "what's best".  Might as well ask if you should buy a Ford truck or a Chevy truck...  you'll get strong opinions on both sides as well as those that will argue a different brand is the best.  Just pick an oil you like that meets the specs and you'll be fine.

msavitt gave you the basics...  wet clutch rated oil...  there are many...  from inexpensive to expensive.  JASO MA rating is something you can look for.  Avoid any motor oil that is "energy conserving" (which is most motor oils these days).  slippery additives could possibly cause clutch slippage.  Many choices... Castrol, Valvoline, Shell, and others make (motorcycle) engine oils that will say something like "suitable for wet clutches" on the bottle...  dozens of boutique specialty oils ($$$) as well...  Or don't forget that suitable Yamalube can be bought at a Yamaha dealer.

Fork oil might be a little trickier...  Yamaha specified motor oil (probably 10w30) which you can still use.  Since those days, most suspension fluids used are much "thinner" so most modern fork oils are probably too light. Also there is no real "standard" for fork oil and one companies 5w might be "thicker" than anothers 10w.  Fork oil for Harleys might be closest as they take heavier weights I think.  There's a guy, Peter Verdone, who has done a lot of research and documentation on this topic.  Search or here's a link to one of his articles.  www.peterverdone.com/wiki/index.php?title=Suspension_Fluid  Caution.  More than you ever wanted to know about suspension oil at that link

May be best to go to a local store that carries oils... choose a common brand, get whats specific for yer bike...
Really be a bummer to not be able to ride because yer shipment of oil hasn't arrived.. Keep it simple for now...

I'm running Rotella T4 15w40 in the gearbox and ordinary automotive ATF in the forks.

If it hadn't come with a cargo rack I would have been looking for one.
