Swinging arm was created by Jammyyammy
Hi all,
I thought I would make sure the swinging arm on my DT400B was greased.
It seems that most videos/posts are about getting stuck bolts out.
My bolt (it has a bit of pitting on it, nothing too serious, I think) came out with a couple of big whacks. It was completely dry with some dried powder/rust on it.
My question is…
Should I just grease up the hole/bolt, put the bolt back in and grease it up with the grease gun on the nipple? Is that a thorough job?
Or should I take it all apart, clean it out and grease it up? If so, can it be done with the back wheel on and the bike (currently no engine installed) on a centre lift?
Are there any good videos out there showing what to remove and what to grease?
Thanks….

Good thing you got the bolt out before it became a big issue. A good cleaning and grease will help prevent it from getting stuck.
There is a sleeve in the bushings that really should be removed. Bolt goes through the sleeve and when tight pinches the sleeve in the frame. Bushings slide on the OD of the sleeve. OD of sleeve and ID of bushings is what really needs grease... as well as ends (and possibly shims) under end caps.
A look at parts diagram will show the parts. It's very simple to take apart, clean, and grease but arm needs to come out of frame..

Thanks again Mark.
I’ve taken it all apart now. I’m glad I did because it looks like it’s never seen grease.
I need to source some parts now. The end caps (one has been a bit damaged by the chain) are available at Yambits (uk). They also sell nylon bushes - are they ok to use???
I also need to source the rubber part that stops the chain from hitting the end caps - because it’s worn through….
Thanks

If the sleeve is not loose in the bushings I'd leave well enough alone. I'd probably buy new ones from Yamaha but aftermarket might be fine.
Sumo rubber makes the protector I believe. Out of stock on website. Might be others that make it.

Shame the protectors are out of stock at sumorubber. May have to get a new one from the states.
Bushes were stuck to the sleeve with dry rust. I removed the sleeve/bushes from the frame. Then separated them and cleaned the surface rust from the outside of the sleeve and inside the bushes.
Bushes don’t seem too loose on the sleeve, but I’m wondering should I just replace them with new nylon items now they are out. I presume I just gently nylon hammer them into the frame?
Thanks again….

I'd contact Sumo.
Bushings are your call. I wouldn't bin the old ones until you've made sure they are identical and you've successfully installed them.
Note the sleeve must be long enough to stick out of the bushings a little but not too much. The thickness of the lip on the bushing is critical.

Think it was Jawa road bike or was it CZ motocross bikes that had a good idea of an oil line feeding the swinging arm bushes from the gearbox oil.
