1973 MX250 false neutral down shifting was created by ruhappy
1973 Yamaha MX250. I'm hitting false neutral when down shifting in all gears, it's doing it every down shift. If I'm in 4th down shifting to 3rd I will hit neutral and cannot hit a gear until I go down to 1st. We have taken trans apart and replaced shift forks with a used set that looked to be in very good condition and other existing trans parts looks good shape. I'm still hitting neutral in all gears when down shifting. When up shifting if shifts good without hitting neutral. I need help to what to look for. Thanks Jerry, Augusta GA

Hello, A quick question for more info, was it shifting fine and one day the neutral problem started?
Thanks Mark

We split the cases for motor rebuild and after riding it slow it would sometimes downshift, I didn't ride it much just up and down the road for just a few minutes. Road first race and and it started hitting neutral when downshifting in all gears all the time. Before we did motor work the bike was not rode for 10 years and not sure if it had problems before. After first race we changed trans forks and it still had same problem. Thanks

Bit of a curly one to find an answer without being in there. Is the stop screw secure & not damaged, bent, or loose in the casr thread. That one isn't adjustable but will have an adjustable small screw but that doesn't alter 'total' trvel--only centralising to pick up the next pin from resting--so don't think its that!!. Is the detent plunger & spring in good condition--spring not broken or plunger jammed up. Is sprocket nut tight, as hold that shaft over to the left. Then we get to selector track grooves for wear at the highest point--the fully in gear point. Then how are the engaging dogs for wear on the edges. Mind you, wear happens on the driving side more than the other edge. Sounds like the mechanism's traveling too far but can't happen unless someone "like me" that thinks they know best lol, & has filed the stops to get more travel. When you pull the lever by hand does it feel as though its moving the drum past the fully in gear position, like it's starting to turn it through to the next gear. Can't normally happen. In fact any gear change only sends the drum about 9/10 of the way into gear & falls or is dragged in from there by dog taper. After all that--don't know sorry. Had one new in "73 & didn't have any problems--except it dumped me hard once haha.

A friend that has 74 MX250 said we will remove clutch cover and make adjustment on the shift linkage. He said he has done it before. As you said it could be lots of things that may be wrong and causing problems. Looks like one step at a time to fine the problem. Your suggestions we will look into until bike is down shifting correctly. Thanks a lot and I will report back on what we find.
