You're probably on to something.  If someone tried to bolt it and bolts came apart while running it would explain that damage.

No doubt those bolts are wrong, I found several nuts stuck in and around the magnets of the rotor. The engine cover also has a hole in it that looks like it came from the inside out so.... maybe one of those incorrect bolts was shoved through the cover along with the other damage.
