Anything is possible. But it doesn't seem likely. Probably best to start your own thread and describe exactly what you mean by "hard shifting" and what circumstances it happens under.

Mine didn't have any shifting problems before I split the cases. Like MarkT said, start a thread for your issue so others can reply.

Ok,
Sorry to hijack the thread, I will start my own thread when I have a second to tackle the problem. I just read this, and then studied the attached reference photos I took during the disassembly and thought for a second eureka!
Do you think this is an issue that needs to be taken care of?

'I think', so don't quote me--but if the circlip on the bearing is fully home then you'll be safe as bearing can't go in any further than that. Interesting though regarding the chamfer & extra chamfer. Still lots to learn.

Ha! I just quoted you! You're 100% correct. On the 175 I had the issue with the circlip was ever so slightly above the case. Pretty much impossible to see. (That's my story because I didn't see it!)
First I noticed the new bearing was missing the "X". It wasn't easy to find a bearing decoder that explained what the "X" meant but once I did, it all made sense... then I noticed the clip wasn't tight to case. Popped the new bearing out and noticed the chamfer difference.
I was pretty lucky actually... had I noticed the clip wasn't flush to the case? Ummm... I probably would have smacked it with a large hammer trying to get it to seat and broken something.

Was looking at the snippet of the latest post my emails shows but not showing who it is, & was thinking i'd better post that we have MarkT to thank for this bearing chamfer info. So thanks MarkT.

I installed the bearing last night, cleaned everything and put the cases back together only to find the clutch push rod has to be installed in the left end thats inside the cases. Didn't even think about it since I just finished rebuilding my 78 DT400 engine. That push rod slides in on the clutch side. The standard bore and piston are still in spec with the light hone. I should have it running again by this weekend with temps in the low 50's it will be decent enough to go ride. Getting ready to start on 2 76 YZ125's.

Yes, that fat pushrod trick. Makes you wonder who at the factory was having a bad day when they designed 'that' then changed back to normal later. Don't you 'just hate' having to part cases you've sealed up.

Put the motor back in the frame. Cleaned the cylinder and head. Base and head gasket no where to be found. Did I really forget to order them? All the other gaskets are in hand, how can thus be? Shrug. On a side note I started plating last night. Did the engine mounting bolts and washers and the head nuts and washers. That kept me up late. But the results are fantastic. I'm hooked!

Grussell...I see two things in your shop I'm doing without so far...The sandblaster and arbor press. I can slip into work and use um there but would be nice at home.
When putting my 76 DT400 together a couple years ago I triple checked that I had that push rod (and ball too I think) in there before sealing it up. At least you discovered it now instead of back in the bike?
