We were getting our motor back together, and unfortunately snapped a case bolt. So we took everything apart extracted the broken stud and now reassembling, and have notced a slight bit of play, pulling the crankshaft in (flywheel side). I don't remember the play the first go around. The bearing feels fine the crankshaft feels fine. I am not sure if I should try a shim, or just go with it and see how it feels when I get the other half together.

If that movement is in the bearing inner race, you must replace the main bearing.
If the movement is the crank snout moving in and out of the bearing inner race, either the crank journal has been reduced in size or the bearing inside diameter has been enlarged. Replace the bearing and hope for the best.

The flywheel side should "float" in and out due to expansion. It should not spin freely in the inner race.

I tried another crankshaft and had the same issue.
Is there a torque setting when using a crank puller?The first go around I really cranked the hell out it, would that cause a issue?

I don’t think so.
It makes a difference where the movement is.

Let’s say all of the balls in the race lost 10% of their diameter. The crank would wobble, slide in and out, up and down. So.... is that what it is doing?

Or is it just the crankshaft journal moving in and out of the inner race?

It's just moving in and out slightly. Not all the way out and it moves in just enough so that the crank will touch the case.

Were the bearing replaced?

Yes they are new

Its held hard against that bearing with the crank gear & nut which i can see isn't on yet. But is the play what you would get if say a C4 clearance bearing were used [guessing]. Clearance is in the race not the fit of the shaft in the bearing. But C4/C3 allows for a super tight fit like on the mag side so the inner race swells a gnats whisker. Without the crank in--can you feel play in the bearing just grabbing the inner race. Is the bearing retaining ring in the case loose the way they're cast in? Not common on those. Things like that!!.

I don't know much about the races or crankshaft fit. Just a question though is the crank puller your using pushing against the inner race or does it rest on the case.
