1974 DT360 446 Prefix..not DT360A? was created by Camp3

I have an oppty to buy a rough 1974 DT360 that is advertised as RT360. Maybe I can swap the 360 motor into my decent DT250A project frame. I have read that may work as all the 250/360/400 74-76 have the same engine mount. My question is what is this bike? a DT360A should be a 445 prefix not a 446 which is what is on the engine and frame, the model code list shows this as a Japanese bike.

Next Question what about this piston availability, I have read this may be a tougher model to source 2nd 3rd, 4th over..
Thanks!

The Yamaha Service Manual, page 1, indicates a prefix of 446- is correct for the 1974 DT360A.

Check the VIN tables in the Tech Library too... 446 is the correct VIN prefix.

Just a note... VIN number prefix is not always the same as "model code"... Yamaha really made things confusing. :Ugh

You'll probably find the part numbers have 445 prefix... if you ever find a parts list that shows two versions of the exact same part, say a speedometer... the version of the part with a 445 prefix would likely be for the US model and the one with a 446 prefix would be for a Japan domestic model (JDM).

Clear as mud?

Oh, and yes, pistons can be difficult to find... check with Enduronut on price and availability as he's likely to have the best supply in the world and the best prices.

P.S. Great job on your captures from the model code list! Nice and clear with the red arrows and all. :likey

My experience during the rebuild of my 360A was that I seemed to be limited to OEM pistons only. I went online several times to different (aftermarket) vendors, and was always frustrated that I was unable to get something "less expensive". A source that was a Wiseco dealer allowed me to look at his catalog, and there absolutely no listings for the 360A. RT1, RT2, RT3 piston port models yes, but not for the 360A reed valve. Enduronut was able to help me out.

OEM goes up to 4th oversize if memory serves.

Could not say, but always wondered if one could 'substitute' a piston port version, once modified appropriately. I suppose at some point someone will be forced into checking that out.
